'Yesterday is a cancelled cheque, tomorrow
is a promissory note. Today is ready cash. Use it.'
Goal setting, organisation and time management skills
are universal in nature and are required by virtually everyone working
at any level of the organisation.
Of course the phrase 'time management' is nonsense.
We can't manage time. There are 60 minutes in every hour, 24 hours
in every day. There's nothing we can do to change that.
What we can do is help people to become better organised,
clearer about their work and personal goals, and better able to
use available time to work towards those goals.
We can also teach people to be more aware of how
their own personality or preferences can result in ineffective time
management. Some people, for example, have a high need to be liked,
or to be in control, or to have contact with other people, or enjoy
crises and emergencies. Consequently, they invest a lot of time
and energy in getting these needs met, rather than working towards
operational goals.
While helping our clients to be more organised and
effective, we found that they needed two kinds of assistance. First
they need some simple techniques- the traditional skills of time
management. In addition they need to increase their awareness of
those internal, psychological, time wasters that distract from the
really important goals and objectives.
This material was developed to help people to recognise
and work on internal time wasters and develop a range of techniques
that will make them more focussed and effective at work.
By the end of the session participants will
be able to:
- Identify priority goals activities in their business
and personal lives.
- Use a range of simple techniques that will help
them become more effective in the way they organise their work
time.
- Identify internal causes of ineffective time management
and plan to eliminate them.
- Identify personal characteristics and styles that
may result in using time effectively or ineffectively.
