"Resolving
conflict is rarely about who is right. It is about acknowledgement
and appreciation of differences"
Thomas Crum
This material has been used as part of training programmes
on Management and Supervision, Team Development, Interpersonal Skills,
Consulting, Negotiation, and Selling Skills.
Say the word 'conflict' and most people imagine arguments,
strife, struggle and hurt feelings. No wonder conflict is often
avoided or badly managed. Yet we have found that people's attitude
to, and style of managing conflict, lies at the heart of individual
and organisational effectiveness.
Conflict and difference lies at the heart of organisational
life. People who work together are likely to have different goals,
values, needs, ideas, attitudes and perceptions. Managed well, these
differences can be the source of creative tension, energy, problem
solving, and success. Managed badly it can result in debilitating
company politics, points scoring, in fighting, or frustrating denial
and avoidance.
We developed this material to help managers, internal
consultants and sales people understand the nature of conflict and
their own style of managing it. Using this material we have helped
participants to significantly re-assess and improve their working
relationships with their own managers, their teams, colleagues,
clients and customers.
By the end of the session participants will:
- Understand the nature of conflict and recognise
its potential for positive as well as negative outcomes.
- Have recognised potential conflict situations
in their working life and have worked on strategies for dealing
with them more effectively.
- Be better able to deal with inter-departmental
conflict more effectively.
- Have developed a method for changing win-lose
into win-win outcomes
- Have a clearer understanding of their own personal
conflict management styles, their strengths and weaknesses, and
ways of building on those strengths and overcoming weaknesses.
